Elephants in the City.

I’ve ridden an elephant in an elephant rehabilitation camp in Chiang Mai, but one thing I’ve never been too keen on is the use of live elephants inside the city. Elephant touts bring the elephants into the city and make money selling bananas to tourists, to feed the elephant. Often the elephants are unhealthy, poorly fed, and many time end up in tragic accidents.

When traveling in SE Asia, if you see an elephant in the city, in a place where it looks like it’s not a good or safe environment, I ask that you take a moment to consider before buying any “treats” for the elephant, as this contributes to the continuation practice.
